This is an expression of my childhood memories and the mesh of modern and antiquated Florida. I looked to Robert Rauschenberg and also Melody Postma,
in their use of old photographs and bright pop-art imagery. I created a graphic, modern and vivid piece with bright tropical colors and images, such as the raised painted
orange slice. This is contrasted with my own nostalgic transfers of photographs of Sarasota’s (my home town) old Amish ice cream shop and layered floral fabrics with lace.
This piece too explores the contradicting aspects of Florida’s culture- the clash of old and new, the overgrown marsh and sunny, paradisal beaches. I transferred my photograph of Spanish moss hanging above a lake onto a white washed background. Florida’s license plate slogan ‘Sunshine State’ is then layered above. I cut a graphic form out of
wooden planks to symbolize rays, inspired by Amélie Bertrand’s imagery. The yellow intensifies towards the tips, drawing inwards to balance the piece.
