Hats off to Karsh

One of my favourite photographers was, and still is, Yousuf Karsh. He took photos of celebrities from Bogart to Bardot, Churchill to Cocteau, King to Kelly, but his work was more than that. He photographed workers performing their own tasks, and his studies of hands is remarkable. I have been lucky enough to see his prints which are mouth-watering. To view an original 4' x 5' print of Karsh's is to see photographic mastery at its best.
Here is an attempt to replicate his style, or one of them, in doing a self-portrait. Manual focus proved almost impossible for me, and auto-focus was a challenge. But I got this. This was done with digital camera and digital software. What he did was pure artistry with film, paper and chemicals.
I tip my hat to one of the greatest - Yousuf Karsh (1908 - 2002).
