The most common cancer among people in the United States, skin cancer is often divided into three main categories: melanoma, basal cell carcinoma (BCC), and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Melanoma stands out from the other two types for being the most deadly form of skin cancer.

In most cases, melanoma appears suddenly as either a dark spot on the skin or a mole. Patients with melanoma must be diagnosed and treated during the cancer’s earliest stages.

Both BCC and SCC are categorized as nonmelanoma skin cancers. They are less deadly and the most common types of skin cancer.

Basal cell carcinoma commonly develops in individuals with fair skin and can result from indoor tanning or frequent sun exposure. BCC often presents as a pink patch of skin or a flesh-colored bump. Early diagnosis is also important for BCC because it can spread to nerves and bones if ignored.

Squamous cell carcinoma is the second-most-common type of skin cancer and is also typically seen on people with fair skin. SCC presents as a scaly patch or red bump on the ear, face, chest, or arms. If left untreated, SCC can grow deep into the skin and result in permanent disfigurement or damage.
