This shot was part of our food & liquids assignment, where we were challenged to shoot food in a way that is interesting and *most importantly* appetizing! I got inspired by fresh summer recipes from cookbooks like Martha Stewart's and Ina Garten's. Dessert is my favorite meal of the day so I chose a light & refreshing summer berries-and-cream mini cake spread. I wanted a well-lit space to express summer sunshine but kept the overall temperature on the cooler to keep that refreshing tone consistent (warm tones made the food look weird and fake). I used depth of field to make the first cake (and especially that beautiful blackberry) the focal point to help avoid being overwhelmed by a busy scene.

The most challenging part of this shot was making the food look interesting and place the berries in a way that made them look effortless without being chaotic, and also make sure not too many same-colored berries were clumped together. While it was tempting to sample the goods, I actually used shaving cream for the whipped cream so it's safe to say that it looks better than it would taste! It was oddly fun to scrub through my shots in Lightroom and watch the berries sinking lower into the whipped cream with each new frame, though.

I shot this in our campus studio with a camera tethered to Adobe Lightroom & edited it in Lightroom & Adobe Photoshop.
