In early 2016, while exhibiting at the Long Beach Comic Convention, I was approached by Upper Deck and contracted to do this first set of sketch cards for the 2016 Marvel Annual set.
The cards that I would be producing were original artist sketch cards that would be randomly placed within packs of this set. I was given discretion to pick the characters that I wanted to portray (within set guidelines), as long as they were the 2016 versions of those Marvel characters. There were a lot of characters to choose from in Marvel's long history of comics, but I went with ones that I thought people would be excited about pulling from a sealed package of cards, or ones that were fan favorites for me.
I began with a loose pencil sketch of the characters on the cards, followed by inking the cards with my Pentel brush pens and Staedtler Pigment Liners. This was followed up by markers to add colors and finished off with white gel pens or white ink for highlights.
As a lifelong fan of Marvel Comics, it was a great experience to be able to draw the characters that I loved and grew up reading throughout my life.
