PhilaU Bus Stop Design

This was a team project done by me and my classmate Padmini Bandakothur
Design Objectives:
•Designing the bus stop to fit the micro-climate of the site
•Making the shelter as Sustainable as possible by using recyclable materials
•Using renewable energy
•Considering safety and comfort of the students
Before any design decisions were made, Philadelphia climate and the site's micro-climate were analyzed. In addition, the existing conditions were analyzed to fully understand what is needed to be done to design a better bus stop shelter for the students.
Philadelphia Weather
The existing bus stop shulter does not protect the students from the hot summer sun and below are the the comfort conditions during both the summer and winter
The Proposed Desingn
Day and Night Shoots
The Design of the Back Area Showing the Shaded Space that can Fit more Students
The Shelter was Designed to be Shaded During the Summer, yet Allow the Sun Light to Enter it During the Winter
Summer breezes are allowed to create a cooling effect through two different opening depending on the direction of the breezes channeled by the buildings. The left opening can be closed during the winter by the university maintenance to block the winter winds.

Material and Techniques
Solar Ivy
•Visual appeal and flexible hardware system
•Proprietary design allows each leaf to be customized through color, angle and rotation
•Individually positioned Solar Ivy installation
•Solar Ivy can be fully disassembled for repairs
•Completely recyclable at the end of its life cycle
Warm Bench
Mechanism:
Uses kinetic energy by pushing pedal to turn on the heater placed in the bench. The bench also powers LED light which indicates that the heater is ON.
Soybean Based Material
•Structure can be built and torn down and 100% recycled
•Material - Stronger than reinforced concrete
•3D Printed
R-cast Ice
•Acrylic textured product (polymethyl methacrylate) with nearly any type lighting
•Offers better thermoforming properties and aesthetical qualities.
•The acrylic used is strong, light, transparent, UV light & Weather resistant
•Very good impact resistance
•Several sizes, colors, textures, surface treatments and edge finishes
Composite Material
•Made of 100% recycled materials:
•60% Recycled Bamboo Fibers, 40% Recycled HDPE Plastic (detergent bottles, milk cartons)
•Ultra low-maintenance and Easy Installation
