Oddy

Character Development

This was a two-part project, coordinated and led by Heleen Steyn.

Part 1 - Character development

Brief: Create an appealing character from the category given to you. Explore, define, re-create and refine your character. The final deliverables are a minimum of 5 poses on A3, minimum of 5 expressions on A3 and one fully coloured render on A2. Copics and wax pencil will be your new medium to explore.

My given topic was "The Seamster/Seamstress".

After some fine tuning, planing and sanding, I arrived at the character of Odysseus, or Oddy for short.

I was greatly influenced by the character design of Vivien Bertin.

Dossier:

Name: Odysseus (Oddy), Named after the Greek god known for his courage & ingenuity.
Gender: Male.
Race: Caucasian.
Age: 40 something.
Physical Appearance: Tall, thin, huge snozz, clumsy hands and feet.
Outfit (referring to time period): 1940's scientist and craftsman.
Nationality: German.
Occupation: Curious civilian (tailor). He possesses magical tools to do good throughout time + space.
Adjectives: Nerdy, short-sighted, clumsy, pre-occupied with his own thoughts, fidgety, smart, resourceful.
Mannerisms: Always stands with his mouth open. Not the best when it comes to personal hygiene. He's got a bad posture and is always brushing his nose with his sleeve or adjusting his glasses.
Emotional baggage: Lost his family during the WWII. He cannot fix what happened, no matter how many times he travels back in time.
Defining moments: Acceptance of his family's death. The discovery of the Wood Dwarves and the tools they forge for him.
Comfort: Sowing. Making or fixing things. Tinkering and chillin' with the dwarves.
Attitude: He despises war. He genuinely believes that there is something good in every living thing. He likes practical jokes.
Relation towards others: Great Respect for the Dwarves. He loves his equals and would gladly help where he can.
Other's relation towards him: Sympathetic, especially after learning his tragic war story. Some steer clear of his clumsiness but tolerate him for his good nature.
Why is he important?: He can travel through time & space.
Goals and Dreams?: To fix what he can and prevent tragic mistakes.
Opinion: "Stitches always leaves a scar."

I was greatly influenced by the character design of Vivien Bertin.
