Being predominately influenced by the Neo-Noir film visual style I decided for this project to experiment and research further in order to understand the origin and meaning of “Noir”. My starting point was emotions and light, two elements that are vital and always present in Film Noir movies. I finally focused on smoking that is a striking ingredient in the films because it was used as an emotional tool and a lighting effect. Major outcomes of my project are a graphical, visual system as well as a short experimental film which highlights how emotion is communicated through smoking and smoking gestures in Film Noir.
