ISTD Dead Wood Archive

The brief was to break down your birth date and combine it with The Dewey Decimal System to find a book that was lost and forgotten — a dead wood archive. My birth date led me to the book Invitation to Philosophy by Yuval Steinitz. This book was written by Steinitz in hope to give people, who have just started a philosophy course or who are just curious, a short and concise insight into philosophy.

In his book, Steinitz has broken philosophy down to three main subjects; epistemology, the soul-body problem, determinism, freedom, and will. I found three plays by the National Theatre that reflects the problems surrounding each of these three subjects. I want people to think, see, feel and understand these three philosophical subjects rather than just to read about them.

By playing on the name of the book, Invitation to Philosophy, I want to invite people to these plays. I have therefore made invitations for each of the three plays where the design choices reflect both the story of the play and the philosophy that Steinitz is explaining in his book.

Chapter one — Epistemology
Ugly Lies the Bone by Lindsey Ferrentino
Chapter two — The soul-body Problem
Lazarus by the David Bowie and Enda Walsh
Chapter three — Determinism, Freedom, and Will
Hedda Gabler by Henrik Ibsen (modern interpretation by Ivo van Hove)
Tickets matching the invites for each play

Thanks for watching!
