Originating from Shanghai when it became the foreign trade port, Shikumen are widely spread in Shanghai, which use to be living space and social space for most of citizens in Shanghai. Over the past 100 years, it has shaped Shanghai’s city character and its urban lifestyle . As the unique urban vernacular dwellings, Shikumen has an adapted western style, as well as rich cultural connotation, and extremely great value as either historical site, art pieces or cultural heritage. Shikumen, a special type of folk house in China, is not only the precious treasure of Shanghai, but also cultural heritage of mankind.
