In 2012 , the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy was shocked by two significant earthquakes, just 9 days apart. These leveled homes, damaged historic churches and buildings, and sent hundreds of thousands of wheels of Parmigiano-Reggiano,
“The King of Cheeses,” crashing to the ground from the high shelves on which they are aged for over a year.
Italian chef Massimo Bottura came up with a concept which could save the country from losing thousands of jobs and millions of dollars by creating a dish using the most affected ingredients which he turned into a social campaign, encouraging people from all over the world to cook the meal ‘risotto cacio e pepe’ with Italy. This ended up being tremendously succesful gaining traction all over the world, thus bringing the world together with food.
