Born in 1821, Dostoyevsky is a prominent Russian novelist whose work remains relevant today. He attended St. Petersburg’s Army Engineering College and graduated with a degree in military engineering, but in 1844 committed to writing full time. His first novel, Poor Folk, was written during a nine-month period between 1844-45 and highlights the perils of poverty and the relationships between people with and without wealth. In 1849, after publishing just two novels, Dostoyevsky was arrested and sentenced to death, though that sentence was later lessened to imprisonment in Siberia.

Following his return to St. Petersburg in 1854, Dostoyevsky wrote three novels, including The House of the Dead, which detailed a fictional account of life in prison. His most famous novel, Crime and Punishment, was published in 1866 following the death of his wife, Maria Isaev. He later remarried, then died in 1881, a decade after completing The Brothers Karamazov.
