La mariposa monarca es una especie única por la migración que realiza anualmente desde las frías tierras Canadienses a los templados bosques de oyamel, pino y cedro ubicados en los estados de México y Michoacán en México para hibernar. Estas mariposas viajeras poseen una gran fuerza y longevidad motivo por el cual pueden recorrer más de 5000 km cruzando toda la parte norte del continente iniciando su travesía en el mes de agosto; su arribo al sur comienza en el mes de Noviembre con el objeto de cortejarse y aparearse dando luz a la generación que volará de regreso en el mes de Marzo hacia Estados Unidos y Canadá. La población se cuenta en millones debido a que las condiciones climáticas que encuentran en México son las ideales para su reproducción.
