Kosuth’s Chair on a Lonely Pyrite
An Interactive Musical Instrument in a 3D Environment
As an artist, I tend to gravitate towards certain shapes over different time periods. I integrate those shapes into a body of work to explore what the aspects that have driven me to that shape.
Recently, I have been into the cubic character of  a pyrite crystal. We, as humans, tend to perceive nature as something irregular and imperfect, whereas, it can create equal sides and straight edges as in pyrite. My goal was to create a relationship between an organic material and a man made object such as a chair. I placed the physical chair from Kosuth’s One and Three Chairs on “planet” made out of pyrite. The two objects interact with each other through collision provoked by the user’s input. Each collision is followed by one of the seven musical notes.
