Branding design and art direction for dismoi Calabash Lights.

"We create hanging or standing lamps made from organically and locally grown calabash/gourds. Our calabash are grown on a small farm in the Kalahari, where they are harvested by hand by a group of lovely Nama women. The raw calabash are then dried out and sent to us, where we clean them, hollow them out, drill each hole by hand, paint them and wire them. We sell them ourselves from our workshop and also attend expos and markets. Each light is unique, shaped by nature, and made with a huge amount of love."
I decided to incorporate different hand illustrated calabash to emphasize an African pattern element and to convey that each light is unique and looks a little different to the next. The use of thick ink lines was inspired by bushmen paintings as the Calabashes are originally grown on a small farm in the Kalahari. I wanted the branding to come across as earthy and used natural, earthy colour tones to convey this. The colours also compliment the wooden look of the Clabash lights. The logo was hand lettered to create an earthy, artisanal and natural feel.
