Looking Through Grandmother's Garden Window
A Textile Art Project by Beverly Hicks Burch

I originally started this project about 1998 and actually worked on a couple of the blocks while vacationing in the US Virgin Islands. That was in the days before rigid restrictions on flying and I could even carry small scissors on board for sewing!
There are nine large hand applique blocks in this quilt. Each block is the same size. The colors I used in this quilt are: blue, teal, fuchsia, purple, lavender, green, gold, yellow, brown and ecru. I used a brown with gold highlights as the sashing for the blocks. This fabric represents the sashing of the panes in an old timey wooden window. The other others are the wonderful colors seen looking into grandmother's garden.
The border is a machine pieced border. I also used a folded dimensional border I call a "filet" border.
It was only in 2012 that was I finally able to quilt the top. I hand quilted the top using cotton batting and 100% cotton thread. I used an overall design. Looking from the top left to the right the design is straight lines in 45 degree angle (or slant) to represent the rays of sunlight coming through the window. I repeated the design into the border. I completed the hand quilting in about two months.
The block designs were from Piece O' Cake design.

I took this picture before I basted the quilt and started the quilting. This is a detail of the dimensional border I call a "filet" border. You can also see a detail of the pieced border.
