Contrascanned

Contrascanned is an collection of contrascans: 3d models that have been "stolen" from videos or photographs unintended for photogrammetric use. The scans include objects or places that are prohibited from photography, hidden from the public, or are otherwise inaccessible. All models are available for download without license, and may be freely disseminated, manipulated, or 3d printed. Many have suggested that the act of photography is inherently appropriative; consider the common folk belief that to photograph an individual is to “steal their soul.” Photogrammetry is the extension of photographic capture into three-dimensional territory. If photography is theft of an image, photogrammetry is theft of an object. The collection includes a website with the 3d models displayed, and several that have been color 3d printed.
