UK-ID

Designed and produced in partnership with Christopher Green (http://chrisgreen.io), in response to an open call for a new national travel document in a post-Brexit UK.
Imagining a more sustainable, dynamic identification system, UK-ID embodies an additive culture that organizes living and working statuses across various countries to build a more robust identity profile. Through the website uk.id, individuals access their status as citizens, residents, and visa-holders through a streamlined and protected service. These simultaneously active facets of an individual’s identity also appear on a passport card with an embedded microchip, acting as an artefact of pride and utility.

Embedded in the design, the text of “No Man is an Island,” by the English poet John Donne sits among the converging landscapes of different nations, embodying diversity, interconnectedness, and exchange. Patterns emblematic of radio waves, water, and movement celebrate open channels and a culture that honors the unique ambitions of every citizen.

A living tool, a UK-ID account can connect to bank accounts and medical records, enriching profiles as individuals move through their lives. This provides direct access to important personal data, and generates agency in the form of residency and voting rights in locations they frequent and contribute to economically. UK-ID symbolizes a form of nationalism that is relationship-based, and accommodates the broad vitality of the population.
