Thought and Space

Thought and Space
Inspired by Ray Bradbury's poem Thought and Space, I have been exploring imagery of space on a small scale. I have always appreciated the Hudson River School's vision of nature as the sublime. In my mind Bradbury builds a vision of space in much the same way as Bierstadt and Church explored the American landscape.

Space has always evoked that same sense of awe and terror in me. Even starring up at the stars, I can't help but feel awe and the terror of knowing how tiny I really am. I believe that is way Bradbury's work has always resonated so deeply.

Using oil, ink, and water on glass, the photograph is created using a long exposure with light painted from below. The interplay of light and fluid requires much experimentation. It's almost like painting in the dark. I get that same sense of awe and terror every time I open the images to edit.
