The Official Cape Town Youth Chaplaincy Lenten Devotional booklet & promo poster
Brief: Design a Lenten devotional promotional poster and booklet for the Youth Chaplaincy of Cape Town in association with Ecclesia to be sold throughout the Western Cape province (state) of South Africa. Each page of the booklet must consist of the day's biblical readings, a quote from one of the readings, a reflection on a reading of the day and a challenge to the reader.
Challenge: No resources provided. Had 2 days to conceptualise and design and 1 week to design the 60-page booklet. Artwork needs to be traditional, yet modern and appeal to ages 16+ .
Outcome: I really enjoyed working on this project. I was given free artistic reign over the entire project so I had room to play with some interesting concepts. I wanted to stick with the traditional Lenten colours of white and purple with green accents, but I was drawn to the crown of thorns as my focal point. I found an amazing simplified icon of the crown of thorns which also created a negative space image of a flower in the centre and my entire concept blossomed from there (pardon the pun!). To me, this graphic symbolised both a selfless death and beautiful new life - two of the main concepts of the Lenten period juxtaposed. Every second spread in the booklet has a black and white abstracted image of the crown of thorns in the background to carry the theme through. I used the palm tree branches as my main motif and a graphic filler if a page looked too sparce. The purple geometric background was the primary background used throughout the artwork because it added a touch of edgy modern simplicity, and was also reminiscent of the pointed tips of thorns.
