Kinetic Architecture

In designing a ecology research station in a mangrove nature reserve, I sought to create a space that immerses the user (researcher) within nature. Wanting to capture the poetic quality of the movement of tides in my design, I studied tidal changes and aimed to create an overall kinetic building structure that responds to the tide change.

In studying the system for the kinetic element of my design, I did several studies on folding geometry from a single piece of paper, and combined several different geometries together, appropriate to the required programme. It is a combination of three spaces: Static, Circulation, Main Programme Space. There are three Main Programme Spaces that spreads out from a fixed point. At high tide these spaces expand, while Circulation spaces contract, and vice versa at low tide.
