Objects & Belongings

The more I spoke to people about their objects and the memories that are attached to them, the more I made relations. Turns out that people hold objects that have been handed down to them by their parents or idols close to their hearts. These objects stand as testament to a generation of beings that have found comfort in using this object and develop a sense of belonging towards it before that pass it on to the next apprentice. Along with this, I based my graphic novel on a personal story and reflections from the inputs I've been receiving.

It begins with a young man who is too engrossed in a graphic novel he's been reading to be distracted by anything else around his dimly lit upstairs room. It's a Thursday night and unlike his other friends the same age, he spends a week-night reading his favourite comic. Until, a familiar voice from behind him calls out to him.

He does as his father asks and rushes downstairs, he recognises the watch his father is now taking off his wrist, it was his grandfather's, and his before that. He accepts his father's offering, not knowing what to make of it.

He tries to distract himself by getting back to his comic, soon to understand that the storyline is so relevant to his situation. He made revelations he wouldn't have made if he hadn't been reading this book.

The graphic showed a timeline of battles against evil, by successors of the same family. Using one scythe they rid the village of its evil. At the end of the graphic he's reading, he finds a boy looking at his father's offering; the scythe. The novel ends with a rough sketch of the watch.
