Based in a small fishing village in Scotland, Jill Calder has been working as an illustrator since 1993. She is also a calligrapher, painter and digital artist with a love of drawing, ideas, colour, ink, typography, book-binding, sketchbooks and yes, deadlines. Jill joyfully blends traditional and digital image-making methods as seamlessly as possible to create her award winning illustrations. According to popular illustration blog, Illustrophile, Jill is an "Illustration veteran, whose work is full of playful anarchy"
Her clients come to her from all corners of the globe and include Visa, Billabong, The New Yorker, All State, Kellogs, Penguin, Siemens, Los Angeles Magazine, ELLE, Crusaid and even a snail farm in the West Highlands of Scotland!
Jill is often asked to lecture and conduct workshops at various universities and art colleges throughout the UK. For the last three years she has been invited by the English Schools Foundation in Hong Kong to be an Artist in Residence. Here she works with 15-18 year olds, introducing them to illustration and encouraging them to draw, draw, draw!
Recent accolades include being shortlisted for the prestigious V&A Illustration Awards, and a receiving a Bronze Award at Images 35 in London. In September 2010, Jill received a Silver Award at Images 34: The Best of British Contemporary Illustration for her work on the hugely successful Garden Detectives show at the National Museum of Scotland. Her work has also been selected several times for both American Illustration and 3x3.
Jill lives with her husband and two dogs in a small fishing village near St. Andrews on the east coast of Scotland. When she is not illustrating, Jill enjoys dog training, gardening, travelling to remote places and cooking fresh local produce for all her friends to come round and share.
