Heirloom textiles of sindh - Ajrakh block printing


A bespoke collection of heirloom textiles from ancient 'silk road' putting together for Hotel Suraghar, Jaislmer for their in-house retail space. Brief was to take crafts from ancient silk road and come-up with textile product range for their customers and travelers who come from all parts of the world.

We have taken 'Ajrakh' hand Block printing and hand-spinning as well as wool weaving for the collection. Where we have worked on indigenous motifs and colour sachems used in making the process of the textile pieces. We have come-up with range of wraps, stoles and yardages. Fabrics were used are hand woven kala cotton (Indigenous cotton), Eri and Habutai silk, hand spun and hand woven wool fabrics with natural dyes.

Ajrakh cloth carries many meanings. The popular story amongst local printers is that means “keep it today.” Ajrakh patterns use complex geometry to create beutiful complex pattern with indigo, madder, black, and white across lengths of cloth. The shapes and motifs of Ajrakh echo the architectural forms of Islamic architecture’s intricate jali windows and trefoil arches.
