My design incorporates the main subject matter of the artist who is featured in my gallery. His primary focus is on water and wind, and my intention was to provide those two elements in the design and to use them as sustainable features.
For heating my main vertical space, I provide a water tank underneath a glass floor in my main gallery and a solar water heating element on the ceiling, which is connected to pipes on each side that come down to the ground floor inside the wall, which will heat the water to 35 degrees during the winter so that heat will rise to heat the main gallery space without the need for electric heating. There is a gap between my concrete slab and the walls on my mezzanine level so the heat can come through it as well.
During the warmer months of summer, I will use this system to heat the water of bathrooms and other facilities using a heat pump, which will ensure that the water in the tank in the main gallery is maintained at a cool 7 degrees, which will provide an ecologically-friendly cooling system for the main gallery.
For the ventilation, I provide openings on both the south and north façades so that the building has cross-ventilation and the rooftop atrium provides an outlet for the warm air that rises during the winter months. The atrium will provide additional natural light during the summer months.
Louvers are installed on my windows on both sides and in the atrium to provide light and sufficient heat while simultaneously reducing glare from entering the building. This design element is vital to ensuring that the artwork on display is protected from harmful UV rays. The louvers are motorized so they can also be closed during the winter to stop the wind from entering the interior space.
All of the elements describe above successfully highlight the subject matter of the featured artist while also providing an aesthetically pleasing and ecologically friendly setting.
