Voices: My Creative Journey
A Story From Desirae Martin

Introduction:

For this assignment I was instructed to complete an original storyboard that was based off of real life experiences and emotions. In addition, the story in which I will tell will also use original drawings, animations that will use consist of multiple platforms. With the use of Ipad and the Macbook pro I needed to create an animation piece that used 6 columns that was divided into 2 rows. Each row would consist of an image that would flow into the next column's image, and subject matter with fluidity. All of the image's were formed through the use of Illustrator Draw, Illustrator CC, Adobe Comp, and Adobe Spark Post. Once all of my drawings were completed I then saved my work to the Creative Cloud. Finally, I took all that was saved on the Creative Cloud, and uploaded it to Behance for publishing.

Materials:

Hardware- Ipad, Macbook Pro
Software-Illustrator Draw, Illustrator CC, Adobe Comp, Adobe Spark Post
Platforms- Creative Cloud, Behance

Creative Process:

Before beginning my illustration I first began this creative process by answering the following questions that were listed in the assignment rubric. These question's ask about my past, present, and future aspirations.

PAST:
Who/What were your earliest creative influences and why were they so important to you

-Robert Munsch
-I found his books to be not only entertaining, but educational as well. I learned a lot of lessons while reading those books, and the stories it told.

What was your earliest memory of a creative accomplishment that you were proud of?

-My picture that I had hand drawn in kindergarten was chosen to be the school's cover for their information book.

Who/What stood in the way of your creativity and how did you prevail against them/it?

- In high school I was so focused on just completing it that I had not had much time to create art pieces outside school. In which case, I was able to take art courses each year so that I would still be able to do some art during my high school years.

What was your area of interest and why?
- Visual arts (illustration)
-Music
-acting
-dance
- I enjoy using different materials to create a picture while using only my hands.

Which experiences, interests or knowledge from your earlier life prepared you for pursuit of your current area of interest?

- Book art and graphic novels allowed me to view amazing pieces of design.

Which singular event in your past most affected your decision to pursue your area of interest?

-
Who influenced or assisted you in pursuing your career ambitions, interests, or skill in this area?

PRESENT:
How have your interests affected your life as a whole (family, friends, where you live)?

- I believe that my interests allowed me to gain  further knowledge in the area in which I am interested that being art.

-More specifically my friends and family all support my love for the arts., and believe that I am a talented artist.

How would you sum up your creative, artistic or design philosophy (ie. what is the role of creativity in your own life and in the life of humanity in general?)?

- Art is not copied or stolen. Art is the outcome created from ones experiences, emotion's, or imagination.

How does your creative work speak to or represent your personal creative, artistic or design philosophy?

-My work is often based on my emotion's, experiences, or imagination.

How has your time at school challenged you creatively?

-There have been a few classes that I have found no interest in. I have a great respect for every field in the arts, however there are areas in this program that do not appeal to me.

Share a time when you enjoyed an epic win in an assignment at school and explain its importance.

- There was an assignment that I needed to focus on the celebration for Canada's 150 year anniversary, and I believe that it is my best work so far.

Share a time when you had an epic fail in an assignment at school and share what you learned from that experience.

- There was an assignment that came out great, however it did not follow the rubric. In which case I was allowed to redo it.

Share a piece of work that you are exceedingly proud of and explain why you are so proud of it.

- This would be the Canada's 150 year anniversary piece. This is because it used a lot of complex designs.

What has been the biggest highlight in the current pursuit of your interests?

-Making sure each art piece is different from the last.

FUTURE:
Where do you see yourself five years from now?

-Either pursuing music and acting.

- Or something with the illustration field.

What are your next steps after finishing the foundation program?

-Getting a design job that focuses on my best assets.

What is the  important lesson have you learned as a student so far this year?

- Follow your gut.

What advice would you give to someone considering entering a program aimed at a career in a creative field?

-Make sure you choose a program that you are fully interested in, and not partially.

If you could make a wish come true, what would it be?

-I wish that my family, and I would be very successful in anything, and everything that we all choose take on in our lives. Therefore, leading to great success both emotionally as well as financially.

Story Outline/Script:

My earliest influence in art was seen in books, children books to be more specific. Out of all the books that I read in school my favourites were from Robert Munsch. Robert Munsch was very famous to me in my early years. Everyone I knew had some love towards reading Robert Munsch books. My friends and my family all enjoyed reading his books. His books contained beautiful art, and majority of the the time they used different concepts in their design. Ever since I was a child I have always enjoyed creating art.
Drawing was one of my favourite past times when I was in kindergarten.
One day during free time I chose to take that time, and make a drawing.
This drawing was one I was very proud of.
Not only did I find it to be well done, so did my teachers.
This led to the decision of having my drawing used as the daycare's informational book cover. Not only was this an exciting moment in my childhood one year later I got the opportunity to meet the great author that is Robert Munsch in person, and it was even better getting to see what stories and artwork he had brought to discuss that day at a children's book conference.

Conclusion:

In summary I learned a lot from this assignment as well as different ways to created a story using multiple Adobe platforms. In addition, the creation of this piece was heavily based on the idea of a story that was focused on a child that being me when I was younger creating a drawing of how the school she attended that being daycare at the time how it should be best represent. In addition, also displaying how the determination of someone can lead to creating something special. This special something was the school's book cover.  Overall, I thought that this video came out great, and well put together. I am satisfied with the quality in which this video displayed. Therefore, starting something, and then constantly working on it until it finally comes together is rewarding as an artist because it shows that hard work pays off even at an early age.
