Do You Need a Mouth Guard?
For some people, when they go to see their Kennewick Washington dentist, they might hear that they need a mouth guard.  You might want to know if you need one, because perhaps you’ve heard of someone you know getting one. Well, mouth guards are actually very particular, and they are for some occurrences that might not be for you, but this article will go over exactly the reason why you might need a mouth guard, and if you need one.
The biggest reason why you might need a mouth guard, especially for at night, is if you suffer from bruxism. Bruxism is a very interesting sort of condition, in that you grind your teeth involuntarily. Some of us might do this on instinct, but there are others that do it constantly and involuntarily. It’s often seen in many people when they are sleeping, which can lead to a variety of health problems.
It does create jaw pain, but it also will wear down the teeth. Plus, clenching your jaw muscles all the time will create jaw and neck alignment issues, and along with wearing down the teeth, it can cause the sensitive parts to be exposed, which causes a whole lot of pain.  This condition is definitely not a ton of fun to deal with, and for many, it can cause extreme pain.

That’s where a mouth guard comes in. it will help protect you from grinding your teeth. If this is due to stress-induced situations, you might not need it, but if it’s involuntary, you will definitely want one of these.

Now, there are some different types of mouth guards you can get. There is the over-the-counter version that you can get at a pharmacy for about thirty bucks.  These will cover the top and bottom, and there are variations.  There are also some versions that have a boil and bite customization, which will mean that the mouth guard isn’t’ formed yet to the teeth and is just a tray. If you get one of these, you can form it by putting it in boiling water to soften the plastic and then put it on the mouth, biting down so that it molds to your teeth.  There is also another form that has a cushion that will mold to the teeth with every bite.  These are economical, but they often wear out a lot faster.  It is important to remember that while you can customize it, it’s not as effective for some as getting a custom guard, so you might consider that.
Custom guards are made by your dentist and are fitted. They address the needs, molding to your teeth via a mold that is sent to a lab that creates these mouth guards.  Often, these can be made out of a hard plastic and they are fitted to either the top or bottom row, whichever is better for you.

They last a long time, but they come with a price, often costing several hundred dollars.  They do offer the best protection, though, and will last longer, especially if your condition is serious.

Finally, if you don’t have a serious condition, there is also an NTI mouth guard. This is a guard that covers both the top and the bottom, and the idea will keep the two teeth at the front from meeting together, which will alleviate the pressure in the jaw so that it and the other teeth don’t grind against one another. Typically, these are around a hundred bucks, and often, this type of mouth guard might be good for those that don’t have it serious. But the biggest part is that because it only holds the front part of the teeth, making them potentially become misaligned.  Often, the front teeth are still taking most of the damage from the jaw and can move them.
