Sketches & Stories

The first time I sketched something, I was four.

It has been a long journey since then.
Winning Drawing and Painting Competitions in School, at District and College Level and
passing the Odisha Lalit Kala Academy Exams with flying colors have been some of the memorable moments.

I sketch when I am happy and I sketch when tears roll down my cheeks.
I sketch when I am bored and I sketch when words fail to convey my emotions.
I sketch to earn my livelihood and I sketch to be ME.

You may ask, WHY? Because of the sheer love for Storytelling and how powerful it is when it comes to depict complex scenarios.

The following set of illustrations were done during my summer vacation in 2016.
Medium : Pencil Color, Pen, Ink on Textured Sheet

This illustration was created on behalf of Mother's Day.
When I was kid, my Mumsy would always tell me the story of Indian God Brahma creating the whole universe in his deep sleep / state of meditation.
I took the liberty to depict the same story my way. My idea was to show Mother Nature creating the whole universe in her sleep.

I have always wanted to adopt a child.
This illustration is a tribute to a very close friend.

~ Short Story : The Soulmates ~
Daughter : Mom, why don't we have a dad ?
Mom : Well, you see my dearie, mom tried and tried but she failed to find a dad who would like her for the person she was rather than the size of her bra,
the curves of her body and the color of her flesh. No matter how far she ran, she kept attracting "confused, insecure and broken" men who liked to visit
every now and then with no intention to stay. And, one fine day mom finally decided to give up looking for "HIM".
Daughter : But, mom you always say that we should never give up hope !
Mom : Well, mom did stop looking outside but she started to look within herself and that's how she found you.
Daughter : So, are we soulmates ?
Mom : Without a single doubt !
Daughter : Mom, are all men the same ?
Mom : No.
Daughter : So, where is the purr-fact man ?
Mom : In mom's Fantasy Land . . . Or somewhere out there where mom isn't looking or may be he is too scared to trust a woman again cause he is hurt as well . . .
Daughter : Here, take my magnifying glass and compass. It will help you locate dad.
Mom : Haha !
Daughter : Dear Soulmate, can I bunk school tomorrow ?
Mom : Nope.

The illustration was crafted for a friend on her birthday.

~ The Untold Fairytale ~
Princess : I hate myself
Witch : Why ?
Princess : I am never gonna be more than these blobs of fat
that grew on my chest. Or this hole between my thighs.
Or these big eyes, chubby cheeks, fuller lips and the list goes on . . .
Witch : Ah ! I see. And I thought you were a free soul,
a grown woman who decided to be the man for herself
and you were gonna look for that shoulder to lean on within you.
Princess : Well, I tried. And when I did, they said I was beautiful within,
they visited me each time as different individuals with no intention to stay.
But I secretly wished they did.
Witch : Ha ha ! Blame it on the idea of Romance we have in our tiny little heads.
The prince charming with your version of happily ever after is a common man with responsibilties
and his own fears and insecurities. When he looks at you he sees a getaway from his daily routine.
Forgive him but forgive yourself first.

Here, have this apple. It will help you escape reality . . .

This illustration was created for my Brother's Birthday.

Some years back a little person walked into my life.
I had to share my parents with him. In fact, I had to share everything with him and he never missed a chance to annoy me !

Sometimes I look at the stars and wonder when, where and how am I gonna find that special person and they kick me right in the arse
and say, " We gave him to you on this very same day some twenty years back !!!"

This illustration was created on Father's Day as a small token of gratitude for my Bapa.

As told by my Mumsy :
When I was just 6 months old, an Elephant waala came to our house and took me away with him.
When my Bapa came to know, he thought I was abducted and he ran in his Lungee, on his Bajaj Chetak to rescue me.

This fast illustration was done for a friend who is obsessed with Marvel and DC Comics

Mothers are the best Story tellers !

A young Birsa Munda once asked his mother, "Maa, how is this World ?"
She replied, " Son, this world is like my torn Saree, you stitch one end and it tears from the other. "
