Hofstra University Fire Safety Report 2016

Hofstra University releases Annual Security and Fire Safety Report 2016
Hofstra University’s Department of Public Safety recently released their Annual Security and Fire Safety Report of 2016, detailing high numbers of drug and alcohol abuse, stalking, dating violence and rape for the past three years.
“[The report] contains information regarding security and personal safety, including topics such as crime prevention, fire safety, crime reporting policies, disciplinary procedures and other matters of importance related to security and safety on campus,” according to the Public Safety website.

The section with the most alarming crime rate was the drug violations category, with a total of 79 offenses in 2015. However, it should be noted that this number has decreased significantly from 121 violations in 2013.
Most of the criminal activity that is taking place on Hofstra University’s campus within the drug, alcohol, stalking, dating violence and rape categories has been inside of their residence halls. When it comes to drug violations, only 38 percent of them occurred outside of campus residential areas.
Despite the amount of crimes committed at Hofstra University, many students still feel safe on campus. In an interview with The Hofstra Chronicle, freshman Amanda Deamer said, “I do feel safe on campus, there’s Public Safety everywhere.”
“When I go off campus it feels like there’s more risk,” Deamer said, “but when I get on campus there feels like there’s nothing to worry about.”
