Find the Pair! - Turkish Letters
Find the Pair!
'Special Turkish Letters' Edition

First part of my attempt to create games aiming to explain Turkish letter sounds to English speaking people. Having an 'inductive' approach, I started with letters that are not available in English language, instead of the whole alphabet. Different from a basic 'find the pair' game, in this one you need to match a letter and its equivalent pronunciation in an English word, with a representational icon. My first experience with laser cutter, screen printing and tangible games.
All the pieces were cut by laser cutter from a big wood sheet; letters and patterns were printed using screen print.
Not having an orientation indicator on the background or foreground forces user to understand the correct orientation of the letter by looking at the matching piece.
Patterns behind the letters are created from the icons in traditional Turkish rugs.
Color coding helps the user to identify the pairs.
Although it is not clear in these images, I is red, İ is orange, Ş is dark green, and Ğ is light green.
'Ğ' doesn't have a sound, it lengthens the preceding vowel. For example my name Buğra is pronounced as 'Boora'.
Lacking of a sound results in it becoming the only one with a square matching piece.
Hexagon shape of the pieces allows the player to create many different layout combinations.
Thank you!
