STORY: A Brand Identity Project

My childhood dream, and something I still fantasize about once in a while, is opening up my own café. Certain cafés have been a very sacred place for me, as they provided me a public, yet safe place, to share my heart with others, and hear the hearts of others. I believe cafés play a crucial role in developing a person and people’s relationships by providing a beautiful, peaceful, or nostalgic atmosphere. My own life story has been built and shared in the environment of a café, leading me to name my café STORY, or "seu-to-ri" in Korean. This café's goal is to create a pleasant atmosphere that encourages the growth of relationship(s) or of an individual and/or peoples.

I started off with the idea of having the logo incorporate the idea of "His Story", "Her Story", and "Our Story". I also wanted to incorporate the Korean culture that I have been very influenced by, and that has a large cafe culture. However, I felt that making a café in America with such the Korean name "Oo-ri Ee-yah-gee" (which means Our Story), would be too difficult to pronounce, and too complicated of a name. I then thought of using Korean characters to use as a logo image- to which I simplified "Oo-ri Ee-yah-gee" to "Seu-to-ri" which is a romanized version of the word "story".
The idea in this animation is this: a pair of friends, a couple, or two strangers are at a cafe enjoying a cup of coffee. A bit of tension and awkward ness is in the air, but as the aroma of coffee and atmosphere of the cafe reaches them, the tension is lifted, and they are able to connect, talk, and enjoy themselves.
