Summary
The Lion Zip-line is an enrichment device that simulates the natural hunting behavior of the lions at the Houston Zoo. The device is currently installed in the lion exhibit, and the next step is testing the device in the exhibit.
Design Components
A loop of steel cable stretches across the exhibit. It is anchored at one end by a post, and the other end is attached to the control box, which is mounted on the roof of the exhibit. A DC motor rotates the pulley, which pulls the cable back and forth. A control panel enables zookeepers to control the speed and direction of the cable. Food is affixed to the cable, and the lions can chase it as the zookeepers move the cable back and forth.
