Mount Aloysius Campus Reflected in Photo Art

CAPTION: Sean Steffy, MBA, a graduate of Mount Aloysius College, now serves as the College’s publications designer. An accomplished photographer, Steffy has an exhibit titled “Mirror & Reflections” on display now at the College’s Cosgrave Center. “Mirrors & Reflections is opened to the public free of charge.

Cresson, Pa. — Mount Aloysius College Publications Coordinator, Sean Steffy is a natural sharer of solid aesthetic talent and a positive spirit. A Lititz, Pa., native and Hollidaysburg transplant, Steffy shares his photography talents in an exhibit titled, “Mirrors & Reflections,” open to the public, adorning the walls of the Mount Aloysius College’s Cosgrave Student Center.

The displayed collection reflects a glimpse of two-and-a-half-years of effort. With his camera as his constant companion, Steffy’s collection of photo art offers a unique look at the beauty of Mount Aloysius College through the lens of a loyal Mountie, and photographer with an exceptional eye.

The collection includes 22 photographs taken throughout the College’s 193-acre Laurel Highlands campus. Steffy’s experienced photo editing skills are also keenly displayed. Guests can see the same landscape altered to show two different scenes. “When I first started taking photographs at Mount Aloysius, I challenged myself to present the landscape from a unique perspective,” said Steffy. “Standard point-and-click photos have never really appealed to me, and I’ve since become obsessed with the idea of changing perspectives—capturing new moments as they occur, and finding new ways to present old visions while using creativity,” he said.

Using mirrors and water to reflect images, Steffy forces extraordinary perspectives from ordinary settings. “I was always fascinated by duplicating and mirroring images. This offers a more stylistic look, which instantly doubles your canvas size,” he explained. “Recently though I’ve attempted to create a mirrored canvas during the actual capture of an image. Using mirrors and water are the first two ideas that came to mind.”

In 2012, Mr. Steffy earned a Bachelor’s degree in business administration. He then earned an MBA at Mount Aloysius, concentrating in project management. Working in the State College area after finishing his MBA, he found his way back to the College in 2016. “This campus and these people are a consortium of sorts,” says Steffy. “And collectively, Mount Aloysius is the first place I decided to call my home away from home. I like it here, and I’m convinced that the wind blows clearer and stronger in Cresson. Thus, it felt only natural to want to catalog the different viewpoints I was discovering on this awesome campus throughout the years.”

Sean hopes his photos encourage the Mountie community to see their surroundings from a new point of view, using reflection similar to what he employs through his photographer’s eye. “When I photograph and design things, I don’t consciously consider myself to be making art in that moment. For me, it’s more about putting things right in my external world,” he said. “I’m simply trying to present or represent a different perspective in a way that intrigues others and inspires them to ask questions about their own perceptions.”
Steffy also shares his gifts in the classroom with Mount Aloysius students as an adjunct professor.

His “Mirrors & Reflections” collection will be displayed until April 14th, 2017. For information on purchasing a print, contact Sean Steffy at ssteffy@mtaloy.edu.
