Nueva Pompeya: Innovation District
Towards a Carless City
The existing condition of Nueva Pompeya consists of abandoned industrial buildings and storage warehouses. With the intention of creating a pedestrian-centered district, the redevelopment of expansive city blocks aim to provide more choice while walking throughout the city. The proposed Innovation District of Nueva Pompeya focuses on creating connections to the larger Buenos Aires area and to cultural nodes throughout the site.  This is achieved by re-routing the current vehicular paths and adding in dedicated bike routes around the edges of the site to internalize pedestrian circulation. Green space is utilized as a fabric between connections around the site and as a means to begin managing stormwater to better serve the river. Two main urban experiences occur throughout the site to aid in these connections.  A central walking street connects one side of the site with the other through two anchor points, which are the park and the tango plaza.  From the tango plaza, a strong cultural “crescent” forms along the right hand side of the site consisting of a performance hall, cultural museum, and a library. The second urban experience occurs along the waterfront, which includes a series of nodes that consist of activity spaces and a ferry stop that connects with other cultural areas around Buenos Aires.
