Emerging Connections between Body, Mind, and Mood

Based in New Jersey, Rosanne (Roseanne) Bostonian, Ph.D., offers holistic, client-centered care attuned to specific physical and mental ailments. Also serving as a Berkeley College adjunct professor of psychology, Rosanne Bostonian, Ph.D., focuses on pathways to healing that strengthen the mind-body connection.

In a recent blog post titled “Understanding Your Owner’s Manual,” Ms. Bostonian explores the expanding views on depression that go beyond traditional brain-centered approaches. In particular, what we eat and the health of the gut, she writes, are linked closely to mood.

One focus area of functional medicine is the neurotransmitters, many of which are generated in the digestive system and associated with feelings of calm. Eating habits that affect the digestive tract in turn influence our ability to function in a happy, productive manner.

Ms. Bostonian notes that mass production of foods has led to a sacrifice of quality, which makes it more challenging to put the right ingredients in our bodies. That said, by carefully perusing the body’s “owner’s manual” and learning about inflammatory processes and individual food sensitivities, it is possible to overcome health challenges and move toward wellness.
