On my mother’s side of the family, both my grandmother and aunt have Vitiligo. They have struggled for years without success against this autoimmune disease, which destroys not only the cells that produce pigmentation of the skin but also their self-esteem. There are those who say the cause is emotional due to a major shock, and I believe it is.
This connection fuelled a desire to create a project that focuses on individuals who have Vitiligo and in 2016 I was introduced to Bruna Sanches(@_brunasanches) and her blog "Minha segunda pele”(@minhasegundapele). She speaks eloquently with affection and delicacy about her acceptance of Vitiligo and this provided an inspirational platform for the images that I was looking for. I'm extremely proud to share the results of such a personal project.
