School year 3
Modulair wall
I started this assignment with exploring different styles and gathering images on Pinterest of them. The biggest part of the pictures was in a medieval style, or futuristic. The medieval style doesn't speak to me as much, so I went for futuristic.
Sketches
At first I wanted it to be some kind of prison, or military facility. That meant metal, hypermodern weapons and searchlights, fences with lasers instead of metal and barbwire, etc. I was also thinking of making a path between two fences where guards with dogs would walk, like at Auschwitz. I started sketching and making silhouettes of the barricades.
After a while I started realizing that I didn't want to go for the hypermodern style. Instead, I gave my sketches kind of a ruined feeling, like it's from the future but still looks old.
Moodboard
I made this moodboard after my first set of sketches, when I already decided that I wanted to go for post-apocalyptic, instead of clean futuristic. The Last of Us and The Division were big sources of inspiration for me, as you can see. The pictures are all a bit messy, which is what I want to go for. The materials seen in the moodboard are the ones you'll see the most in my project.
Materialboard
For this assignment I had to study a lot of materials, as they were new for me. I spent a lot of time studying certain textures, to be able to draw them myself, eventually.

I put some of them in my materialboard, as you can see below.
My wall
My wall has kind of a history: quite long before the apocalypse started, before the world collapsed on itself, the government built quarantine zones throughout the country, to protect people if a dangerous disease would break out. When this actually happened, people were still unprepared. Evacuations went slowly and only a small percentage of the population found safety inside the walls of the zones. The apocalypse went on and more infected started to threat the healthy people inside the walls. After a long time of resistance the guards couldn't handle it anymore and finally the gates gave in.

Fast forward to now: it's been two years since the first outbreak. There's no government left and everything has gone quiet. Survivors travel from city to city to scavenge food and supplies, in large groups or with smaller numbers. A bigger group has claimed one of the zones as their home and started to repair the barricades. Since the buildings are government-made, all of the materials are still very strong, which makes it the perfect place for a hideout.

The buildings are damaged. Some marks are from long ago, when the apocalypse just started. Others are more recent and done by other scavengers, trying to get in.
Main gate
I started with the main gate. I designed it to hold off hordes of zombies, capable to stay whole, even when a great force pressured it. Only the lock on the gate has come off, together with some other, smaller damages.
After I was done with the gate itself and the plastic sheet, I looked for ways to make the image more interesting. Damage and old signs would do the trick, so I made some signs and made the gate look less "perfect".

First I thought of texts to place on them, like:

             WARNING
RESISTANCE TO GUARDS
RESULTS IN PUNISHMENT

       QUARANTINE ZONE
STAY CALM, OR YOU WILL BE
REMOVED FROM THE LINE

I decided to only go with the last two signs, that's also why the first one isn't rusty or damaged.
Lamppost
The next thing I made is a lamppost. It will be placed between parts of the wall, mostly around the main gate and corner towers.
I decided to make it only slightly damaged, because it's no target for scavengers or other threats.
Wall
Next is a part of the wall. Around the gates it'll look like this, while other parts may still be - mostly - whole.
I also made this version. The scavengers put a plastic sheet over the hole in attempt to cover it.
Gate tower
The tower is next. It's supposed to connect to the main gate on both sides and then have a bridge connect the two towers.

When I first started drawing this, I wanted to draw the broken window on my own. I studied a lot of broken glass and gave it a try:
I later realised it would look better if I blended in a texture that I took off the internet.
Corner tower
The last part of my wall is the corner tower. It has six sides so the guards can watch all sides without a problem. The narrow openings in the concrete part is to shoot from. This tower isn't a priority for raiders and such, when they attack the former quarantine zone, that's why it has less damage than the towers near the main gate.
For the footer I also made less damaged versions of the wall, first tower and the lamppost.
