Where has all the Coal gone? (Data Visualisation)

Where has all the Coal gone?
Data Visualisation
This brief consisted of a set of data we were given to interpret in order for it to communicate clearly to an audience. The data given to us by my University was about the energy source coal and its production.

I created a series of graphs to communicate the production of coal. I interpreted the data in a bar chart, line graphs and a British map representing the mines still open in 2008. I wanted to communicate to the viewer how coal has decreased and why. I also included descriptions why the coal has decreased providing the audience with a feel for the story the data is trying to portray. I produced the graphs to show meaningful information that is easy to understand. I wanted my graphs to communicate data about coal but also to look aesthetically pleasing to the viewer. I took inspiration from Guardian data and Ben Willers who use specific data to represent a story that can be easily understood and is attractive to look at.
