THE GENTLEMAN'S TRIUMPH

Live Or Die By The Sword

To ascertain the rumors about the resistance to the imposed conversion, the Crown sends from one of its plantations in the New World, an artillery vessel, the HMS Lady Sofia, to patrol the area and discourage pirate attacks.

...

Heir of rich properties in Barbados, Stede Bonnet, an explorer and untrained pirate, bought a big wooden ship and equipped it with cannons. Intercepted by a Spanish galleon, it has narrowly escaped with big losses regarding both its structure and its crew.
Owner of an ambiguous personality, Bonnet longs for a free spirit living, although willing to live by a code. He is bored by the domestic life, but willing to spend months in the sea for just one fortunate day. He doesn't seek for fame or fortune nor expects only joy and fun. In fact, he values inspiration more than gold.
While trying to recruit new men for his crew, he tries to obtain a letter of marque. For that, he got into a risky deal with rear-admiral Marie Catherine DeGraff, accepting to become a Royal Navy informant among the pirates as long as his ship, the Revenge, is under repair in Nassau.
Due to his aristocratic education and furtive personality, Stede goes unnoticed among the civil population, disguised among the nobles at palaces or among the unwashed in the filthiest corners.

...

Aboard of the swift HMS Lady Sofia is the captain of sea and war Jonathan Barnet, an important and honored officer among the Caribbean governors. Even before sunrise, he goes after Benjamin Hornigold and his ship, the Ranger.
