The campaign to repeal the 8th Amendment in Ireland has become an increasingly prominent discussion, particularly amongst the young people of Ireland who never had the opportunity to vote on the matter. The Eighth Amendment equates the right to life of a pregnant woman with that of an embryo or foetus. In doing so, it criminalises abortion in all cases except where to continue a pregnancy would result in death.

The 8th Amendment provides a heated debate of different opinions and principles of right and wrong which come into conflict, with two different groups with opposing opinions on what is considered ‘right’. This hostility has aided the introduction of myths around abortion provided by those who oppose repealing the 8th Amendment. Myths such as abortion can cause breast cancer is used as a fear tactic by both the church and conservative politicians to justify the lack of changes in the law on women’s reproductive rights.

Our aim was to create a unique interactive installation to educate people on the myths and facts around the abortion argument in Ireland. We also want to create a discussion and get the viewers to voice their opinion on the matter.
