Third Arm Projects

From the interest in prostheses developed in the making of the early Synthetic Being Projects, I developed the a series of works around a long standing desire to have a third arm positioned below my right arm. The desire went back to soldering in art school and I think it is a pretty common thought amongst people holding soldering irons.

While I was initially attracted to the idea of a third arm because of the advantages it could give to my daily function, I remained interested because of the hindrances which the awkwardness of an extra appendage directly below my primary appendage can bring up. These hindrances are immediately apparent when trying to function while wearing the prosthetic, or attempting to draw with it.

This set of projects was worked through quickly in the studio and is intended to be viewed as a series of developed sketches.

The prosthetic quickly showed itself to be absolutely ludicrous and I won't even show you the drawings that I made with it, though the universal rotator joints worked very well as shoulder (the elbow was what made drawing so uncontrollable) The projects as a whole lead only to this, a continued desire for a real third arm, or the funding that Stellarc has, and an insight into how to begin to animate or give some sort of function, or rather action, back to the Synthetic Being series. Walking With Synthetic Being 7 (peg-leg) was a direct result of this experimentation.
