I do not consider myself a typographer but I do like to use text in my illustrations. Rather than approach a project from a typographical mindset, I think in terms of ‘type as image’ – using words and letters to enhance and accentuate the artwork.

I prefer to create my own letterforms rather than using existing typefaces - and I usually only make the single word or specific letters that I need for the illustration.

This project is an experimental exploration into producing a complete alphabet, then applying it to an illustrative theme that compliments the typeface.

The typeface is named Vox Vulpes, which approximately translates from Latin as ‘voice of the fox’. I chose a Latin title because the typeface has an ornate, almost runic, quality that is meant to invoke ancient writings - and the name ‘voice of the fox’ is intended to express the subtle edge, or ‘teeth’, that I aimed to instil in the type.
