Tropical Treats Vegan Cookbook

Typography 2 – Cookbook
(8.5x11 saddle stitch)

I decided to make my cookbook on tropical vegan desserts!
To reflect the cheerful vibes of summer and sweets I decided to use colourful pastel hues and customized hand-lettering for a pleasurable visual experience on each spread.

Arguably one of the most important parts of a cookbook is the cover. With thousands of other books on the shelves, the thing that entices a customer the quickest is definitely the cover. In accordance with the playful mood of the cookbook I decided to hand-letter the cover with a brush pen, filling the negative space around the mouth-watering cone with flourishes and text to create an eye-catching piece of cover-art.

When I was looking through other cookbooks, one of the biggest issues I found was the cramped text which made differentiating sections very difficult and the reading experience quite stressful. For my layout I chose to have a lot of white space and each section (summary, ingredients, directions) to be grouped apart, allowing the spread to breath and the reader to browse through with ease. For the body text, I chose Warnock Pro as the classic wedge-serif has excellent readability and perfectly balances the free form of the brush pen.
