Beijing Blue - A contemporary portrait of China!

Beijing Blue
In my series “Beijing Blue” I took a closer look at the people of Beijing. I focused on this city only, as it is the capital of China and so has always attracted people from all over China and the world. As the political center as well as a center of transformation Beijing offers many opportunities to find work and accumulate wealth. Therefore, day by day millions of people make their way to this city. Street scenes reflect this multi faceted mixture of migrating workers, nouveau riches, students from China and abroad, creatives, entrepreneurs and many more.

In my project, I tried to capture this multitude of moments. Using a blue background for my portraits which was held up by random bystanders, I watched new and spontaneous relationships unravel between passers-by, whose lives usually go parallel ways and would never have touched. The fact that those passers-by holding the blue sheet did not know that they were in the picture together with the officially portrayed persons - thus they did not stage themselves - is revealing separate stories about them all. I brought Chinese people of very different social background together, wanted to soften fixed social barriers, start a dialogue and unite all of this in my time exposure. The goal of these pictures is to give a face to the configuration of this city and, by and large, to the people in the streets of China.
