I am a member of Michigan Tech's CinOptic Communication and Media Enterprise team. We do video production, photography and graphic design work. Spring 2017 I was put in charge of redesigning our logo and subsequently, new banners, shirts and posters.
Designing a logo can be quite a long process. It took approximately 4 weeks to finalize our logo. In that time I created 7 different logos plus variations of them. At our team meetings, I would present the logos and we would discuss any changes we wanted to make as well as what we liked about it. I then would work to make changes to my design to suit what we desired in the logo.
The first set of logos I created were the most varied. I created 5 unique logos for the team to choose from (below).
After presenting the above logos, we came up with a few ideas. I then created 3 more logos to present at our next meeting (below)
At this point, we decided on a logo that I would finalize as our official new logo. I went through a few changes and presented them to the team once more. After this meeting we decided on a final logo. I had to make a few adjustments to formatting so that we can scale it easier for our website and various products.
Here are my final variations:
Our final new logo is the following:
This was my first time creating a logo for an organization rather than for a class project. I learned a lot during the process. I had a lot more at stake with this redesign. I also had to overcome issues with communication with all the team members as well as the advisor. It was hard to get everyone to come to one conclusion, but in the end we were able to come up with a design that everyone likes.
