Drawing on the concept of mass urbanization, I created this collection as a showcase of the infinite sprawl, the rote conformity, and the emerging visual patterns found in the modern city.
There is also a tension of culturally dichotomous themes:
-Menacing clouds recall Ukiyo-e paintings, while the geometry of the buildings are distinctly Western;
-African shanty towns and football stadiums inspire a quilted texture, while manifested in a overt reference to European historical cartography;
-Umbrellas display a common scene in Tokyo--a prime example of the Western/Eastern amalgamation;
-A row of endless bikes recall any urban center--Beijing, Amsterdam, Chicago...
The medium of surface repeats plays on this theme of potentially endless modernization.
