ReTypography 3 - Train Ticket





現行的背磁式火車票由台鐵改版發行已經大約十年了。撇開紀念價值和鐵道文化不談,台鐵車票實在是慘不忍睹,只有雜亂再雜亂。
去年初,因為馮宇設計師和許瀚文設計師相繼提出了高鐵車票的改良設計,引起非常多網友的討論。
總的而言,多數網友對現行高鐵車票的功能性都不太滿意,但如何決定各別資訊的相較重要性、
以及怎麼在現有的印刷方式下作改善似乎難以取得共識。
不過,在盡可能的了解網友們的意見後,我還是歸納了幾個重點方向作為台鐵車票的再排版參考。

Currently using magnetic tickets have been issued by Taiwan Railway Administration about ten years. If we take off the values of memento and railway culture, there’re really nothing praiseworthy of it - the layout of the tickets are absolute tragedies. Last year in February, designer 馮宇 as well as Julius Hui demonstrated their redesigned tickets of Taiwan High Speed Rail, which brought up a hot discussion about it. I spent a little time to collect the critics to the redesigned tickets, and found out that even though people had all kinds of ideas about the revisions, pretty much everyone of them were unhappy about the current ones. Except from that common upset about present tickets, the other most discussed yet having most disparate opinions problem was the priority levels of each information. 

For example, is departure and arrival time more important or train number to a rushing passenger? Or should the date and location displayed more evident than car and seat? Also, because the details of the restrictions of current printing procedure were unclear, people couldn’t tell if the redesigns were practical solutions or not. Still, I managed to sort out some crucial points as the references of ReTypography version of the tickets. 

因為是單純的再排版,除了合理的整理之外,ReTypography系列都不會更動原使版本的內文資訊和元素。

ReTypography series focuses on design of typography. Except from necessary reorganization, the information and elements of original editions are not modified.

台鐵車票可分為大張的對號列車票或特殊票種票以及小張的非對號列車票,無論中、英或數字都一律使用同樣的明體字。
雖然搜尋不到明確的車票印刷方式,但似乎是使用撞擊式印表機,也因此字體都是低端的點陣字。
同樣的,雖然搜尋不到完整的票種分類,但無論是大張票還是小張票都有多樣的變化。
在面對變化時,除了包含臺灣鐵路局字樣、出發和目的地及售票時間等少數資訊有盡力保持固定位置之外,
其餘資訊的排版都毫無邏輯;唯一有跡可循的邏輯或許是有空間就塞的處理方式。

The tickets can be sorted into two types: large one for express trains or special trains, and small one for local or ordinary trains. Both types use same serif fonts for Chinese, English and numbers. Looks like it’s all printed by line printer, so the typefaces are all pixel ones. The exact number of the variation of the large and small tickets is not clear, but there’re at least six kinds of each. While contents are changed, except from few information’s position like the name of Taiwan Railway Administration, the time of departure and arrival or the time of ticket issued are fixed, all other ones are arranged with no reason at all. The only logic of the layout here, I guess is to fill the empty space. 

以下將分別說明ReTypography為大小張車票的再排版概念。依序為字型選用、網格系統、資訊層級、以及資訊分類方式。

Following part is the ReTypography concepts for both large and small tickets, including typeface choices, grid system, priority levels of information, and classification of information.








大張票ReTypography版本中文選用文鼎晶熙黑體Demi Bold、英文及數字則選用Frutiger Neue Regular。
中文依資訊重要程度分為12pt、9pt與6pt;英文則分為16pt、10pt及8pt。字體選擇以舒適易讀、不帶給使用者閱讀壓力為主要依據。

ReTypography version of large ticket chooses AR UDJingXiHei Demi Bold for Chinese, and Frutiger Neue Regular for English and numbers. According to different important level, from higher to lower, font-sizes of Chinese in sequence are 12pt, 9pt and 6pt. 
For English the font-sizes are 16pt, 10pt and 8pt respectively. To use these two typefaces with high readability, reading the texts wouldn’t cause passenger extra pressure while rushing.








圖文元素離上下裁切邊4.5mm、離左右裁切邊為7.5mm。網格架構以橫排最小單位2mm、直欄最小單位1.8mm做為圖文起始點參考線。

Distance between contents and margin on both right and left sides is 7.5mm; on top and bottom sides is 7.5mm. All contents’s are guided by 2mm horizontal rows and 1.8mm vertical columns.








閱讀資訊依照重要性可分為四個層級:
1. 車次、車廂與座位
2. 出發地點與到達地點
3. 出發時間與到達時間
4. 其餘無需即時閱讀的資訊

According to importance level, information can be sorted into four class:
1. Train, car and seat
2. Departure and arrival location
3. Departure and arrival time
4. Other information without immediate identification necessity








為了確保視力不佳或趕時間的乘客能上對車、坐對位置,套上動態模糊與高斯模糊效果做簡易的模擬測試,
結果可見第一層級的資訊仍可辨識。

To ensure passenger with poor eyesight or in rush can get the right train, right car and right seat, the ticket is tested with motion blur and gaussian blur effect to simulate two circumstances. Turns out information of level 1 priority is still able to identify.








除TR PASS外,資訊內容可大約分類為四個區塊:
a. 地點與時間資訊
b. 車次、票種與車種
c. 票務資訊
d. 其餘資訊

Contents can be categorized into four sections:
a. Location and time 
b. Train number, type of ticket and train
c. Detail ticket information
d. Other








小張票ReTypography版本中文選用文鼎晶熙黑體Demi Bold、英文及數字則選用Frutiger Neue Regular。
中文依資訊重要程度分為14pt、7pt與5pt;英文則分為15pt、8pt及5pt。字體選擇以架構穩固、清晰俐落為主要依據。
