BURN - creating type

The parameters of this assignment were to create type out of materials that related in an interesting way to the word they formed. The goal was to explore the creation of letterforms outside of a computer.
I had the idea to use flames early on because I was looking to take on a challenge and I believed they could add depth to the chosen word. Once I had this idea, the word burn was the first that came to mind. After this I considered numerous other words, to try and find the best one but I always ended up back at burn. I believe this was the right choice because the letters are not made by the fire, they are being destroyed by it, and thats what I wanted the image to convey.
The letterforms were three feet tall, I spent days constructing them from sticks I collected and wire. I enlisted my entire family to carry them down into a ravine, attached fabric soaked in lighter fluid, and lit the whole thing on fire. The letters burned to pieces and all I am left with is these photographs. The word says burn, but the image says beautiful destruction.
This project helped me to better understand how the materials or the font used to form a word, can add an element of complexity allowing a word to have meaning beyond its definition.
