So is a self-trained artist. His works are built upon the Zen concept of 'Cast Away.' He paints mainly with his hands. Colors are selected without a glance as he continuously looks at the canvas. It is mainly impromptu. Every action calls upon coincidence in order to annihilate the ego. There is no intention, just process. It is to be deeply held as a body, similar to prayer or spiritual practice. So aims to be a vehicle for his art to pass through.

In So's youth, he immersed himself in literature and Zen. Initially, So focused on written forms of expression: rap and Haiku. Although So grew up in Naoshima surrounded by visual art, his inspiration to become a visual artist was gradual. After visiting Art Brut exhibitions, he felt that he could -- and had to -- create something, thereby beginning his journey as a visual artist.

So wants to change the art scene in Naoshima as an outsider who, in reality, is an insider. Although Naoshima is known as "the island of art," all of its pieces are imported and nothing has been born on the island. As a Naoshima local for generations, So presents his art as a way to offer a unique perspective of the creativity and talent that is born right here in Naoshima. He hopes that his work will create a stir in Naoshima's art movement so that generations to come will feel empowered to share their art as well.
