Character Development and Storytelling: Cameo and Caric

INTRODUCTION

For this project, our class was tasked with creating both a caricature and cameo portrait of a classmate using Adobe Draw. The former part of the assignment stressed exaggerating the facial features of our subjects, while the latter hinged on accurately representing them.

MATERIALS:
iPad
Stylus
Adobe Draw
Behance
Creative Cloud

CREATIVE PROCESS

I took two photos of Joanna with my iPad - one of her in profile with a stately expression, for the cameo, and a more goofy expression for the caricature shot. I wanted great contrast between the two, both in tone and execution.

I found that my success here came from interviewing Joanna herself. It gave me a good idea of the contrast between her serious self and goofy self. I also found out that she loves whales and will soon be moving to Vancouver, which provided the theme for my caricature.

PRODUCTION METHODS/WORKFLOW:

CAMEO:

1. I took a picture of my classmate Joanna in Profile.
2. Imported it into Adobe Draw.
3. Created a drawing layer over it
4. Traced the facial elements I wanted to retain.
5. Removed the photo layer and to reveal the finished product.

CARICATURE

1. Took a picture of my classmate Joanna in a goofy pose
2. Imported it to Adobe draw and created a drawing layer over it
3. Traced her face extra large and body smaller
4. Removed photo layer
4. Added background elements

CONCLUSION

This project challenged two of my main weaknesses - the use and operation of computers, and using a minimal number of lines to get the final composition's point across. I found to be very patient with one's self while using new Adobe products and to ask for help if needed - even one incorrectly executed step can cause unforeseen problems down the line. I also learned how to reduce what my instructor Jim Kinney called visual "noise" - excess lines and detail that detract from the minimal expression of a successful cameo or caricature.

Rough attempt at my cameo with too many extraneous lines.
Final cameo illustration with only the needed lines. Much better!
Process pic of my caricature showing the photo layer under the drawing layer. This one also suffered from an excess of "noise."
Final caricature with photo layer and unnecessary lines removed.
